Person- Short description (English)
A 36-year-old transsexual woman was discriminated against in the bank when she requested crediting services. After she had obtained new ID documents representing her gender identity and new name, she came to the bank she had been previously served by as a man. In Moldova, one's personal identification number generated by the state is used almost everywhere where people are required to provide their IDs. This number does not change even if one has changed name and gender marker. Since she had been previously served in this bank under her old male ID, the bank clerk informed her that the personal identification number she had provided them belonged to a different person according to their database. The woman was refused bank services and accused of using false ID. She had to disclose her transgender status in order to explain the situation. After this she was insulted and humiliated by the clerk in front of other customers. When the sacandal started to escalate, the bank management called the police and the trans woman was fined for disturbing public order. After several days, when she had paid the fine, she returned to the bank and told them to reimburse her the amount of the fine she had paid threatening them with a lawsuit. Bank management returned her the money she had paid for the police fine.
