In March 2015, a 22-year-old self-identified androgynous person from Ukraine, who from February 2015 has been seeking asylum in Moldova on the ground of war conflict in the east of Ukraine, was subjected to degrading and humiliating treatment from a woman doctor who he had come to for a refugee medical certificate due to his feminine gender expression. When he took off his shirt and the doctor saw his pierced naval, she called him a “hermaphrodite” and asked if he had male genitals. Upon receiving the affirmative answer, she said, “It’s good that you haven’t cut them off”.
